From Jamaica to Entrepreneurship

For Shaque K. James, entrepreneurship began long before she became an author. Born and raised in Jamaica, some of her earliest lessons about business came from watching her father operate his shop. Those early experiences introduced her to the realities of hard work, business ownership, money, and perseverance.

In 1999, James immigrated to the United States with determination and a desire to build a better future. Over the years, her professional journey expanded across accounting, business ownership, management, and interior design. Today, she is an entrepreneur, financial professional, interior designer, wife, mother, and lifelong learner.

She is also the founder of KNH Financials LLC and FileFree, ventures that reflect her commitment to helping entrepreneurs better understand their businesses and finances.

Making Finance More Accessible

James’s transition into authorship grew naturally from years of working with entrepreneurs. She repeatedly encountered talented people with promising ideas who struggled to understand the financial side of running a business.

That experience inspired her to write File This Under Freedom: Where Accounting Meets Purpose, a nonfiction book designed to make accounting and business finance feel more approachable.

James wants to make accounting feel less intimidating and more relatable.

Rather than presenting financial education as something reserved for accountants and financial professionals, James focuses on practical knowledge that everyday entrepreneurs can understand and apply.

Where Accounting Meets Purpose

At the heart of File This Under Freedom is a message that financial knowledge can create freedom. James wants readers to understand that they do not need an accounting background to understand their numbers, make informed decisions, or build a successful business.

The book combines real-life experiences, practical financial lessons, humor, and straightforward explanations. James intentionally moved away from the traditional format of a technical accounting book because she wanted readers to feel engaged rather than overwhelmed.

Her goal is not simply to teach readers about money. She wants them to understand the connection between financial awareness, confidence, stability, purpose, and legacy.

Seven Years in the Making

The journey to completing the book took approximately seven years. For James, the challenge was finding an approach that could bring accounting education together with entrepreneurship, real life, purpose, and freedom.

She wanted to create a book that entrepreneurs could relate to rather than another resource filled with complicated terminology and technical concepts. The result is a work shaped by her own experiences, including the challenges, mistakes, sacrifices, and lessons that came with building businesses of her own.

One chapter carries particular significance. Chapter One, “Where It All Started,” returns to Jamaica and James’s childhood memories of watching her father run his shop. Looking back, she recognizes those moments as some of her earliest lessons in business, money, hard work, and entrepreneurship.

A Message for Entrepreneurs

James hopes File This Under Freedom reaches new and aspiring entrepreneurs, small business owners, creatives, students, and anyone with a promising idea who feels intimidated by the financial side of business.

Her message is straightforward: financial knowledge is something everyone can learn.

She wants readers to finish the book feeling empowered, confident, and ready to take action. More importantly, she hopes they gain greater clarity about their businesses and the freedom they are working toward.

A Voice for Women in Business

As a female author working in business and finance, James says the writing process taught her to trust her voice and take up space in conversations where women’s perspectives matter.

She recognizes the many responsibilities women often balance while pursuing professional and personal ambitions. Her experience has reinforced her belief that women’s knowledge, stories, and perspectives have value and can encourage others to build something of their own.

Her advice to aspiring women authors and entrepreneurs is equally personal: do not wait for everything to be perfect. Trust your voice, remain authentic, and recognize that your experiences may be exactly what someone else needs to hear.

Building Beyond the Book

For James, publication is not the destination. It is the beginning of a larger vision.

She is developing FileFree, a financial platform designed to help entrepreneurs better understand and manage their businesses. She also plans to develop workshops, entrepreneurship programs, and educational resources inspired by the book.

Looking ahead, James hopes to continue writing about legacy, leadership, and generational wealth while building an ecosystem centered on education, entrepreneurship, and financial freedom.

Creating a Legacy of Knowledge

Shaque K. James brings together finance, entrepreneurship, creativity, and personal experience to deliver a message that extends beyond traditional business education.

Her journey from Jamaica to entrepreneurship in the United States has shaped her understanding of perseverance, opportunity, and purpose. Through File This Under Freedom, she is turning those lessons into a resource for others who want to build with greater confidence.

For James, true success is not simply about making money. It is about understanding what you are building, why you are building it, and how that knowledge can create freedom, stability, and a lasting legacy.
