Starting a business is a big achievement for many entrepreneurs, but maintaining one is the larger challenge. There are many standard challenges that face every business whether they are large or small. It is not easy running a company, especially in a fast-paced, ever-changing business world. Technology advances, new hiring strategies, and now, political changes coming with the new administration, all add to the existing business challenges that entrepreneurs, business owners, and executives have to deal with.
Maximizing profits, minimizing expenses and finding talented staff to keep things moving seem to be top challenges for both SMBs and large corporations. We have been interviewing companies from around the world to discover what challenges they are facing in their businesses. We also asked each company to share business advice they would give to a younger version of themselves.
Below is our interview with MaryEllen Reider, Co-Founder and Executive Vice President at Relevium Labs, Inc.:
What does your company do?
Our company designs and sells the Yarlap® with AutoKegel® – an FDA cleared medical device to strengthen and tone a woman’s pelvic floor. The Yarlap® is like a super-duper Kegel machine because it takes the guesswork out of performing Kegels correctly. The Yarlap® with AutoKegel® allows virtually all women, even those who may have severe muscle atrophy, to treat female urinary incontinence, improve their sexual performance and sexual expression through pelvic floor muscle control in the privacy of their own home. Yarlap® is the exclusive product on the market to do so.
We design all our products at our headquarters in Ohio. Our designs are used in the USA and by the national healthcare systems of France, Germany, Scandinavia and Great Britain. Our designs are used in clinical research and our lead designer is an author and referee for medical and scientific peer review journals.
What is your role? What do you enjoy most about your role?
As an original founder of the company that designs, manufactures and sells the Yarlap® with AutoKegel®, I direct business planning and the day to day management. I manage communication with our customers, influencers, and subcontractors to help bring awareness to women’s pelvic floor matters and how Yarlap® can help women with solutions to their very personal issues of pelvic floor health. Customers often call to tell us they have regained bladder control using the Yarlap® but what’s really exciting for us is when women of all ages (even in their 80’s) using the Yarlap® call to report they have regained the ability to control her pelvic floor muscles, including hold and release for intimacy.
What are the biggest challenges in your business right now?
Our biggest challenge is to help people understand that pelvic floor health is for women of all ages and that pelvic floor muscle control is more than just sex – it’s about total well-being Muscle strain and injury can result from childbirth or repetitive motion in sports.
It’s important for both sexual performance and expression to be recognized as part of a woman’s well-being because women need to feel good about the variety of ways they can experience pelvic floor health and sexual wellness. And, better pelvic floor health with Yarlap is also about freedom and confidence – well-being is all about balance. We are doing something that is making a difference in people’s lives.
If you could go back in time, what business advice would you give to a younger version of yourself?
Operationally I would recommend working with subcontractors that match us in size because we have found they are the ones who understand our needs best and they have grown with us. Also, I would tell myself to be patient with the internet because everything takes time. Years of experience go into medical equipment design to make a device safe and effective.
When putting something inside the body and near delicate tissue, most women are very careful and they seek accurate information. Unfortunately, not all the information on the internet is accurate. Women naturally focus on safety and efficacy which is great for us. Yarlap® is available through hospitals, independent pharmacies, physician and physical therapist offices. I would advise patience (most women understand price is an effective indicator of quality and risk).
