Starting a business is a big achievement for many entrepreneurs, but maintaining one is the larger challenge. There are many standard challenges that face every business whether they are large or small. It is not easy running a company, especially in a fast-paced, ever-changing business world. Technology advances, new hiring strategies, and now, political changes coming with the new administration, all add to the existing business challenges that entrepreneurs, business owners, and executives have to deal with.

Maximizing profits, minimizing expenses and finding talented staff to keep things moving seem to be top challenges for both SMBs and large corporations. We have been interviewing companies from around the world to discover what challenges they are facing in their businesses. We also asked each company to share business advice they would give to a younger version of themselves.

Below is our interview with Alex Levin, Founding Partner and Director of Strategy at L+R:

What does your company do?

L+R designs and builds digital products and visual identities for businesses and entrepreneurs. We also offer consulting services that guide business owners and operators in applying technology solutions to their businesses' operations. We are headquartered in Brooklyn, New York with a European office recently established in Barcelona, Spain. Since our founding in 2012, our team of designers, developers, and strategists have helped companies create seamless intersections across their business’ processes, platforms, technologies, and customers’ experience.

What is your role? What do you enjoy most about your role?

I’m the Director of Strategy of L+R. I am passionate about branding, product, technology and the visual arts, and the team we continue to build, along with our client roster, makes the job a dream. Our mission is to improve life with design and technology. We use principles of strategy and aesthetics within our work to provide the best outcome for our client's and their customers' experience. I enjoy working with the creative craftspeople that make up our team, with diverse backgrounds, to make a real impact in our clients' business. Seeing a project that goes from a vision into reality, that is then used by sometimes hundreds of thousands of people, is very gratifying, exciting and meaningful in fulfilling our mission as a company.

What are the biggest challenges in your business right now?

Our biggest challenge at the time is keeping up with the demand of our services. We are a small and tight-knit team and are very selective on the types of projects we work on and the teams that are behind them. When we first started the business this was scary; knowing that we needed to make sure work was coming in and that it was not just "any work". As time went on, we have built relationships with our clients that not only bring in consistent and exciting work, but at times bring in more work than we have capacity for at the time. We are constantly looking for talent to make sure we are keeping up with our client's needs while maintaining and pushing towards the highest quality output for them.

If you could go back in time, what business advice would you give to a younger version of yourself?

Focus on developing a long-term strategy and goal aside from "doing it on your own", along with short-term tactics in place for the what is currently on our plate. I started the company after I graduated college. This was something that my younger self was overly eager to do, however, where I lacked in years of experience, I had in overwhelming drive and ambition. These qualities helped us to attract prestigious companies that sought out our services.

However, it though did not leave much time for myself to focus on the vision and growth of the business. In the last 2 years, we had to develop plans to start to scale out our team and offerings since the market was evolving. Our staff is now diverse in cultural background and skillset. They compliment the expertise that myself and my co-founder embodied when we first decided to start the business, and are key to our team, the providing industry-leading solutions we are building our reputation on.
